The goal of massage is to reduce pain and limitations by increasing circulation, removing toxins from the body, and achieving relaxation in the animal. Establishing trust with the animal is most important when beginning massage. When doing massage there are no hard and fast rules but establishing a basic routine is often helpful. In the horse if is often helpful to start at the head, usually on the left side and work from side to side. In cats and dogs it is important to establish a routine that suits the individual animal's preferences. The power of intention is also important in massage. When using your hands as tools for healing, you allow positive energy to flow through your hands to the body of the animal. With practice your hands become more proficient in handling the tissues and your healing abilities increase.

Proper massage involves more than just muscles. All soft tissues including tendons, ligaments, nerves and connective tissue will be handled. Both hands should be placed on the body of the animal to balance energy. The energy coming from the left hand is more soothing while the energy from the right hand is more stimulating. If an animal is particularly sore on one side, massaging the opposite side first will release excess energy from the sore side because the nerves which supply both sides are connected.
